The works contract for the construction of the new São Jorge slaughterhouse has already been awarded by the Institute for Food and Agricultural Markets, IPRA (IAMA), as part of the Recovery and Resilience Plan (RRP).

According to the order issued by the Regional Secretary for Agriculture and Rural Development, António Ventura, lot 1 of the international public tender, which consists of construction works such as earthworks, landscaping, wastewater and rainwater networks, electrical installations as well as telephone and data installations, was awarded to the companies Tecnovia - Sociedade de Empreitadas, S.A. and Tecnovia Açores, Sociedade de Empreitadas, S.A., for €7,249,000.00.

In turn, lot 2, which concerns isothermal and cold storage, was awarded to the company Frincor Frio Industrial e Comercial, Lda, for €1,657,912.79, while lot 3, which concerns processing equipment, was awarded to the company Blasau S.L. for €2,697,040.22.

Lastly, lot 4, which concerns the fluid network (water supply, fire network and hot water plant), was awarded to the company Termovapor - Indústria de Caldeiras, S.A. for €698,680.64.

With the aim og ensuring the levels of food quality, safety and excellence that distinguish regional production, the Regional Government has made significant investments in slaughtering infrastructures, creating the conditions to ensure that the added value resulting from the preparation and processing of carcasses remains with the Autonomous Region of the Azores.

In an effort to constantly improve the regional slaughter network, it is necessary to make new investments aimed at building new slaughter units or improving existing ones. In addition to evolving market requirements, the design of these units must also keep pace with the legal constraints on the matter, including those concerning food hygiene and safety, the processing of byproducts, animal welfare, the pursuit of environmental targets and climate change.

The respective contracts will be signed once the legal deadlines and subsequent procedures have been completed, according to the rules set out in the Public Procurement Code.
