Subsecretário Regional da Presidência
The Regional Under Secretary of the Presidency, Pedro de Faria e Castro, expressed the Regional Government's satisfaction with the success of the "My Europe" European citizenship project, which targeted 4th-grade students from all the islands of the archipelago.
"The initiative lived up to expectations and we received excellent feedback from both teachers and students," said Pedro de Faria e Castro.
The Regional Under Secretary emphasised the fact that he had been encouraged by teachers from various schools across the archipelago, where the project took place, "to replicate this initiative in the future," even among 3rd-grade students.
Faria e Castro highlighted the "success of the initiative." According to him, the project succeeded in "addressing the European Union in a simple and clear manner, through fun activities and uncomplicated language for children, who will one day play active part in a European project of a Union of 27 member states."
The "My Europe" project was developed by the office of the Regional Under Secretary of the Presidency and promoted by technicians from the Regional Directorate for European Affairs and External Cooperation. It took place between November 2023 and February 2024, with 63 sessions covering 1,441 students from schools accross the 19 municipalities of the Azores.
This educational initiative consisted of promoting the project through interactive games that demonstrated the importance of participatory democracy and improved knowledge about the 27 member states of the European Union.
The project also included the preparation and distribution of an activity book, aimed at 4th-grade students, made up of exercises in a wide range of areas that allowed them to learn about the symbols of the European Union, the values, the Euro currency, the countries and the Outermost Regions, with special emphasis on the Azores.
