The President of the Regional Government, José Manuel Bolieiro, praised on Friday the various "merits" of the agricultural sector on Friday, expressing his "pride" in the ability of the sector to generate wealth and emphasising the need to follow a path of "excellence."
"Excellence cannot be achieved without attitude. I want to praise the attitude of producers. With the means at their disposal, they strive to do well and achieve excellence. This brings prestige and income," he declared.
José Manuel Bolieiro spoke in Ponta Delgada at the opening session of the awards delivered to dozens of farmers by the Micaelenses Young Farmers Association.
"I acknowledge your desire to be as enterprising as your parents and grandparents but with a special sensitivity to sustainability, innovation and adaptation and training in new technologies. This is the future," said the President of the Government, addressing younger generations.
He also defended the progressive continuity of "the Azores' "self-sufficiency in terms of food," something that the covid-19 pandemic proved necessary.
"Agriculture has never stopped," he recalled, before listing several measures implemented by this Regional Government for the sector, namely the end of the apportionments.
"This was and is a strategic commitment. We are committed to maintaining this commitment, which did not exist in the past." It has now also been confirmed, for example, in the Partnership Agreement signed with the social partners, including the Azores Agricultural Federation.
