The Regional Secretary for Agriculture and Rural Development, António Ventura, marked today, on Terceira island, the Regional Day of Forest Rangers. These professionals have contributed to the "sustainable vision" of what the Azores are.
"Forest rangers were the first living school of environmental sustainability in the Azores" many decades ago, said the government official.
"It is important that they are not forgotten by the Azorean people and the governments," stressed António Ventura. He also praised the role of "nature caretakers" played by these professionals, which is fundamental for those who visit the Region.
"We can tell our tourists that we continue to be the example of the example in terms of the environment and sustainability," he continued.
The production of plants in nurseries, the monitoring of construction works, the improvement and conservation of forest and rural roads and the recovery works of vacant pastures, besides their maintenance, are also part of the duties of the Azorean Forest Rangers.
They are also responsible for managing game and fish resources, monitoring game and fishing activities in lakes and streams, and carrying out censuses.
The Regional Day of Forest Rangers was established in 1997 as a public recognition of the importance of the role played by these professionals for over 50 years in ensuring the rational use and enhancement of the forest and natural resources of the Azores.
