About the event
The Regional Laboratory of Civil Engineering – LREC, in collaboration with the Portuguese Society of Seismic Engineering - SPES, organised the International Workshop on NATURAL HAZARDS - NatHaz16 under the theme “Soil characterization and site effects”.
It was helded in Furnas village, in S. Miguel island (Azores), on the 23th of April 2016, just after the end of the 10th National Congress of Seismology and Seismic Engineering, helded in Ponta Delgada, from 20th to 22th of April 2016.
The Workshop offered a good opportunity for a forum on several issues related with natural hazards, particularly about soil characterization and site effects, in this first edition.
Due to its tectonic and volcanic environment, the Azores region is affect by most of all natural hazards, namely, earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, landslides, floods, costal erosion, etc. So, it is the perfect place where professionals in those areas can discuss those problems. It was also a great opportunity to closely contact the local reality, evidenced both by technical concerns in terms of monitoring, prevention, soil characterization and site effects related with the action of the largest earthquakes of the last decades (July 9, 1998 in Faial island and January 1, 1980 in Terceira island).
It as also provided an excellent occasion to enjoy the beautiful landscape of S. Miguel Island.
