The solid waste that constitutes marine litter has two origins: land and sea.

Land origin:

  • Littering is the result of poorly leaving litter on the coast;
  • Solid waste disposal and landfills;
  • Industrial activities;
  • Rainwater (discharge of wastewater into streams, rivers and sea);
  • Transhipments of sewage water.

Marine origin:

  • Commercial fishing;
  • Recreational vessels;
  • Merchant, military and scientific research vessels;
  • Offshore oil and gas platforms.
