The solid waste that constitutes marine litter has two origins: land and sea.
Land origin:
- Littering is the result of poorly leaving litter on the coast;
- Solid waste disposal and landfills;
- Industrial activities;
- Rainwater (discharge of wastewater into streams, rivers and sea);
- Transhipments of sewage water.
Marine origin:
- Commercial fishing;
- Recreational vessels;
- Merchant, military and scientific research vessels;
- Offshore oil and gas platforms.
