Economic and Social Council of the Azores

The Economic and Social Council of the Autonomous Region of the Azores was unanimously approved by the Legislative Assembly of the Autonomous Region of the Azores.

It is an independent collegial body, of an advisory nature, whose objective is to foster the dialogue between the political power and civil society, stemming from a process of dialogue and consultation between the social partners and the Government of the Azores.

The Economic and Social Council of the Azores accompanies and advises on matters of economic, labor, social and environmental nature.

The Economic and Social Council of the Azores is responsible for commenting on preliminary projects and projects for economic, social and environmental development plans, namely the regional plan and the budget, as well as on the reports on the respective execution, but also on economic, labor policies, social and environmental, among others.

The Economic and Social Council of the Azores is composed of:

  • a President, elected by the Legislative Assembly of the Autonomous Region of the Azores by a 2/3 majority;
  • four members of the Regional Government;
  • eight workers' representatives;
  • eight representatives of employers' business organizations;
  • three representatives of local authorities;
  • two representatives of private social solidarity institutions;
  • a representative of consumer protection associations;
  • a representative of environmental protection associations;
  • two representatives from the cooperative sector;
  • a representative of associations in the field of gender equality;
  • a representative of associations of people with disabilities;
  • a representative from the University of the Azores;
  • a representative of the Azorean youth;
  • the representatives of the Autonomous Region of the Azores in the Economic and Social Council;
  • three personalities of recognized merit in the areas of competence of the Council, to be designated by the Council itself.
